Yes, YOU are an Expert!

Yes, YOU are an Expert!

Anyone with an ounce of humility is a little hesitant to flaunt the title “Expert.”  But why not? When you are an expert, more people will buy your stuff, subscribe to your blog, care what you have to say, share your content with others, and contact you for speaking engagements.  It’s unfortunate that many bloggers fail to call themselves experts when they indeed actually are.  What is the definition of an “expert”? YOU are the expert if you know MORE than the person you are communicating to, educating, or training. Ever thought about that? If you know how to set up a WordPress blog but your audience doesn’t, you are an “expert” at setting up WordPress blogs as far as they are concerned. If you have actually made money with an online business and your audience has not, then YOU are an EXPERT at online business for their purposes.  You do not have to know more than other experts… only more than your target audience. There will always be someone who knows more than you no matter how much you know. I’ve been blogging and doing online business for almost 15 years but I could easily write a list of hundred people who are more of an expert than I am, especially if you get specific about skills or experience.  To be an expert, you don’t have to be THE EXPERT, top dog, numero uno in a given niche, market, topic, or business. So don’t shy away from being an “expert” because you know you are not in the top 10% of the entire group. You only need to know more than your audience and communicate that knowledge to them. Solicit their questions about the topic, research it, and become even more of an expert as you present answers.  Whatever your reasons for not branding yourself as an “expert,” you need to get over them. People with a casual interest in a subject are blog readers; people with valuable information and insight into a subject are blog writers. People who know more than their audience and can impart their knowledge/experience to them, are “experts.”  If you honestly are NOT an “expert” in your niche, topic, or market, you should strongly consider picking something else to write about or investing a lot of time in educating yourself to a higher level.  Generally speaking (there are exceptions), it is going to be hard to have a successful blog or thriving business that relies on your reputation as an “expert” that people can trust and recommend if you can’t even muster up the nerve to consider yourself an expert (of course, some people think they are...

Finding an Income Stream in Affiliate Programs

Finding an Income Stream in Affiliate Programs

A blog is not just a place to speak your mind and share your adventures; it is also a place where you can earn serious money. Many bloggers all over the world are learning to blog the smart way and take advantage of affiliate-advertising income streams. Affiliate programs are more common than you think. Visit a website or a blog and pay attention to banner advertisements on the side or bottom of the site. It is not true that only popular high-readership blogs can successfully promote ads; even a start-up blog can begin displaying ads. The deciding factors as to whether or not you can earn an income from affiliate advertising is whether or not your content matches the advertiser, and if you can generate enough traffic to view the ads. Ways to Earn Income There are three ways to earn from affiliate programs: • “Pay Per Impression” – your income is dependent on the number of times a banner is shown on your site, called an “impression” for short. It is also referred to as “CPM” or “cost per thousand.” So a CPM of $10 means you earn ten dollars for every thousand banner displays. • “Pay Per Click” or “PPC” – your site visitor has to click on the ad or the banner. The trick is to make the banner as attractive and as targeted as possible. • “Pay Per Sale” – you earn by commission every time a visitor clicks on the link and buys the advertised product. Getting Started With Affiliate Programs The first step is to choose an affiliate network where you can choose advertisers for your site. Some popular choices include Google AdSense, Amazon.Com Associate Program, Commission Junction, Clickbank, and LinkShare Corporation. Your advertisements will really depend on the content you share. As an example, if your blog is about travel, then look for affiliate programs and products that can relate to you and your readers’ interests. All you have to do is get the affiliate code from your account and paste into your site. Put some thought into which of the three payment methods featured above will be best for your site. Starting out may seem easy, but it always helps to have a strategy to start earning. Advantages and Disadvantages There are hundreds of dollars to be earned per month with effective affiliate marketing programs. But before you jump on board, here are a few advantages and disadvantages to consider. For the advantages, it is fairly easy to sign-up for an affiliate program. You just need to choose which product or service to advertise and match it to your site. You also do not need a...

Reader Question: How Do You Create e-Books? Can You Make Money Selling Them?

Reader Question: How Do You Create e-Books? Can You Make Money Selling Them?

You’ll find a lot of marketing scam, junk programs and gimmicks out there promising quick riches from the creation of e-Books. Can you really make money from them? Can you write them yourself? How do you price them?  Here are the specific questions I received from a reader: I have been thinking about writing an e-Book. Is it a good idea? I have no idea.  It depends on your content. There is no “magic” about e-Books anymore. They are mainstream and exist by the gagillions.  Great content doesn’t even guarantee your e-Book will be a “good idea” in the sense of sales. For an e-Book to be a good idea you have to have these elements: great content, a receptive audience, a price that your audience instantly recognizes as worth the investment, and a marketing effort appropriate to your sales/income vision. A note on price: if you hit on the right idea and the right audience, it is possible to charge for an e-Book and make a killing. I have friend who has made almost a half million dollars in the last 5 years on a 24 page e-Book that deals with a personal health issue. He hit the right topic, at the right time, to the right audience.  Yes, no kidding, a half mil. That’s about five digits more than I’ve ever made from an e-Book, even with my size audience.  I’ve had some success with e-Books but not even  remotely close to that “grand slam” my buddy knocked out of the park, over the parking lot, across the street and into someone’s back yard. More on price… there is one price now that is going to be the choice for most given where the market has evolved in the last decade: FREE.  Thank you Google. In a nutshell, the new price model of choice is “free”, using it to: grow an audience, instill loyalty with continued high quality content and then move to a phase of tasteful monetization (which can come in several forms; that’s a topic for another blog post). Should “free” discourage one from writing e-Books? Only if you are after “get rich quick” or afraid of hard work and time. Otherwise, e-Books are fantastic way to market your knowledge, reach a large audience and build your brand.  Like any business, done right, those things can end up over time converting to real income. There are benefits of e-Books over printed books or blogs: they can grow “virally” via email, distributing exponentially to any one with an inbox; they can be taken offline by saving the file on a local computer; they can be printed for hardcopy reading.  e-Books provide...
